Beaufort’s Best at Anchorage 1770

I recently had the privilege of staying at Anchorage 1770, a restored waterfront mansion in Beaufort, SC. The original house from 1770 was opened as a boutique hotel in July 2015 after almost 2 years of renovations. The result is absolutely stunning and is getting rave reviews from everyone. They made the NY Times Top 52 Places to visit in 2016!

Anchorage 1770 Parlor

Anchorage 1770 has 14 unique rooms, including two that are in the new addition at the back of the house known as the cottage. These two rooms are not “historic” but are quite lovely and very private. I actually stayed in one of these rooms myself and enjoyed the quiet and my in-room fireplace.

Rooms in the main house have gorgeous king beds with sumptuous linens. One room at garden level has two queen beds and one large room on the main floor has an enormous soaking tub with a view of the water. Each room has kept many of the original features of the house, including fantastic plaster and woodwork. Most rooms have original fireplaces and they are currently fitting them with gas so they will be usable in the near future.

A highlight of the house is the third floor terrace overlooking the water. They host happy hour here nightly with complimentary cheese plates and drinks for purchase. They also have yoga here in the mornings. It is a perfect place to enjoy the magical sunrise and sunsets over the water.

The hotel includes a wealth of amenities: complimentary parking, a welcome glass of prosecco, fruit and cookies during the day in the parlor, full breakfast, turndown service with lemon water and fresh cookies,  and bikes, beach chairs and towels for guest use. The hotel is pet friendly and provides the pets with beds and treats. They are within walking distance to everything in town. They can arrange tours, pack a picnic lunch or make dinner reservations. And one of my favorite amenities is the locally made, goat milk soaps in the rooms. Just heavenly!

Beaufort is an excellent location about halfway between Charleston and Savannah. It is the perfect addition to any trip along this lowcountry coast. And the owners Amy and Frank are excellent hosts who welcome you into their home like family. I can not recommend this hotel enough.

Why I offer Travel Insurance to my clients.

You have dreamed about it forever. You saved your pennies to take that once-in-a-lifetime trip. You book it and start counting the days until you leave. Then the unthinkable happens….

  1. We all have bad things happen to us at some point. Whether you get sick, break a leg, a family member needs you, you lose your job, etc. things can derail a trip at the last minute. Many components of your trip can be non-refundable and  insurance can protect you from having to pay for a trip you can’t take.
  2. It is a fact that airlines do not always run smoothly. Your flight can be delayed, cancelled, or your baggage may be late or lost. Insurance can reimburse you for these inconveniences and help replace what is lost. A voucher issued by an airline that has to be used with them on a future flight is not really the same as having insurance reimburse you so you can use it where you choose.
  3. Many US Medical policies, including Medicare, will not cover patients overseas.  Medical coverage is a major reason I offer insurance. If you are sick, or have a medical emergency while on vacation, insurance helps you get the medical care you need.
  4. Sometimes nature surprises us with a volcano, flood, hurricane, or earthquake that prevents you from traveling. Mother Nature does not always warn us in time to change our plans.

Simply put, Life is unpredictable. Insurance is there to help solve problems that threaten to ruin your vacation.

How does a Travel Advisor plan vacations better than the internet?

You will find many articles online and in magazines that try to educate the consumer on the value of a travel advisor. I have even shared quite a few of them myself with my clients. They will tell you about our expertise, experience, contacts, time-saving, money-saving and being there for you if something goes bump in the night. All of that is true but the key reason really comes down to service. A live person can simply take care of you better than a computer can. Here are a few of the questions I may ask my clients:

  • Are you a simple chicken nugget girl or will you try anything?
  • Do you prefer economy or first class, in air and accommodations?
  • On vacation do you resemble a sloth or the energizer bunny?
  • Do you prefer solo or just family, or do you like large groups?
  • Do you like large resorts or small charming boutiques?
  • Do you like sweeping ocean views or mountain vistas?
  • Do you mind the size of a room or is a suite a must?
  • Do you prefer bars and nightlife or cultural sites and museums?
  • Is this your first time out of the country or are you well traveled?
  • Do you prefer a strict schedule or to go with the flow?

By finding out as much as possible about my client’s travel style and what they want to achieve on a particular trip, I am able to plan a vacation that is actually suited just for them.  Does your internet booking site ask you anything besides a credit card number? Of course not. To them you are just a transaction and they don’t care if you book a hotel or tour that is not at all what you really wanted. We all work hard and many people save for vacation all year. Don’t just leave it to chance. You deserve to have someone help you create your dream vacation.

Historic Charm in New Orleans: The Roosevelt

I recently stayed at The Roosevelt in New Orleans before a cruise. I love the stories and charm behind this historic property within walking distance of the French Quarter. The location just off Canal Street is perfect for getting around.

Waldorf- Astoria took over the property after Hurricane Katrina. It was previously managed by Fairmont and was heavily damaged in the floods. Waldorf-Astoria restored many of the original features and hired artists to duplicate things they could not save. The end result is a beautiful property with so many fun details reminiscent of the 1920s.

The original mail slots that ran vertically from floor to floor

The original mail slots that ran vertically from floor to floor

Cute sitting areas on each floor with rotary phones that worked

Cute sitting areas on each floor with rotary phones that actually work

They restored much of the relief work around the ceilings and there is even a rendering of Teddy Roosevelt that is fun to hunt for. Sorry no picture to guide you as that would be cheating!

There are many stories surrounding the hotel of dirty politicians and corruption in the old days. There is even a story about mayor Huey Long building a highway just to get to the Roosevelt faster and rumored he hid a box of taxes there though it has never been proven. The hotel hosted numerous famous and infamous guests over the years.

The property is also home to the state drink the Sazerac, and it’s bar by the same name. It is a drink of whiskey, bitters, and rye. The Sazerac did not allow women in the early days, except at Mardi Gras. So in 1949 women dressed up in their finest and stormed the bar. Each year they recreate the event by dressing in vintage clothing and large hats and storming it again.

Another beautiful feature is the clock in the lobby. It was in a World’s Fair in Paris and was purchased for the hotel from a private collector- Nicholas Cage.

Lobby Clock

In keeping with the style of the entire hotel, the rooms are traditional. They offer comfortable rooms with sitting areas and many larger suites.  My picture is a little dark but you get the idea.

IMG_3379

And one feature not so traditional is Rooftop at The Roosevelt. On the roof is a beautiful pool, hot tub spa,and bar. Great for relaxing and even has some open area for event space.

Not to be missed is Domenica, John Besh’s artisanal pizza and Italian restaurant. Wood fired pizzas with imaginative toppings. My family is a little plain so we stuck with margherita and the prosciutto pizzas. Wonderful.

The Roosevelt is a proud Virtuoso property. By making reservations through Kiel Travel you get breakfast for two daily at Teddy’s Cafe, a $50-100 Food and Beverage or Spa credit, and reserve a deluxe room and get upgrade at time of booking.

Four Seasons Maui

After an incredibly long day of flying, and delayed flights, we arrived at Four Seasons Maui at midnight. Our reception was warm and friendly with a traditional lei greeting and their amazing mint ginger lemonade. The staff could not have been more helpful and they quickly whisked us away to our room for some much needed sleep. I hate that we arrived in the dark, but it actually made it even more special to wake up in Hawaii and see the amazing views for the first time.

Sunrise from my balcony

Sunrise from my balcony

Four Seasons in Wailea offers some of the largest guestrooms on the island. The rooms are angled so almost every room has a view of the ocean. We stayed in an ocean view room with two beds and a sleeper sofa so it could easily accommodate a larger family. They also offer a club level floor and numerous larger suites.

First stop was Duo’s for a spectacular breakfast buffet. The buffet features at least four stations of hot and cold foods, plus a couple smaller tables with pastries and cereals. They also have a gluten free section. Duo’s offers the breakfast buffet and then serves dinner with a focus on steak and fresh seafood. The also have Ferraro’s by the pool for lunch, Snorkel’s by the beach for light fare and snacks, Caffe Ciao for deli and bakery items, and the Lobby Bar. Their feature dinner restaurant is Spago by Wolfgang Puck.

Each weekday from 8:00am-1:30pm they host local artists and craftsmen in the open air along the first floor. You will find photography, jewelry, paintings. ceramics, and clothing. The vendors change daily so you can always find something different. I saw some very talented artists, esp. a black and white photographer,  and some stunning jewelry designs.

The pools area is quite large and features a beautiful fountain in the middle of the main pool. There is a smaller waterfall pool and then a separate private adult only (21+) area. There is food and drink service around the pools and all seating at the main pool area, including cabanas, is free. The adult only pool has cabanas for rent at $485 per day with champagne, fruit, large tv , couch, etc.

Four Seasons is beachfront. All beaches are public in Hawaii, but Four Seasons really does not share their beach with anyone. There is chair and umbrella service on the beach. They also offer complimentary snorkel and outrigger canoe trips. The Outrigger was one of my favorite things from the whole week.

Besides water sports, there are plenty of ways to stay fit while here. They offer complimentary tennis , a cardio gym outside, regular gym inside, fitness classes, and a path along the beach for jogging or walking.

Four Seasons Maui is a beautiful hotel with fantastic service. They offer a great value with numerous complimentary services and amenities. There is no additional resort fee.
• Traditional lei greeting
• Children’s Program every day year round (9:00 am to 5:00 pm for kids ages 5 to 12)
• Use of crib, stroller, high chair, playpen. Toddler proof guest room with safety attachments
• Honeymoon, anniversary, birthday and children’s amenities
• Aloha Suite – early arrival and late departure facility with showers, lockers and lounge area
• Resort car to golf, tennis, shopping and dining in Wailea area
• Overnight shoeshine and sandal repair service
• Local calls and standard internet for multiple devices
• Enhanced coffee and tea service, and bottled water in room
• La Bottega bath amenities
• Use of cabanas, umbrellas and casabellas at main pool and beach
• Ice water, chilled towels and Evian spritz at pool and beach
• Sunscreen in a choice of three SPFs available in the pool area and beach

Pure Vida in Costa Rica!!

I just returned from a week in Costa Rica and have to rave about everything. The hotels, the people, the food, the scenery, the activities. It was one of the best vacations I have been on, and truly one of the most spectacular places.

I flew into the San Jose airport and then took a 3 hour transfer to Fortuna in the Arenal region. About an hour into the ride, we stopped at a small roadside restaurant and had some of the freshest ceviche ever, and some tasty chicken and rice. This was a great start to my Costa Rican adventure. Also a great way to break up the ride, which follows some very winding and rough roads.

I arrived at my hotel for the next three nights- the magical Nayara Springs. This resort opened in January 2014 and quickly rose to the top of Conde Nast and Travel & Leisures hot list. The resort adjoins the Arenal Nayara hotel but is accessible only by bridge and is a resort in itself.  Nayara Springs is adult only and consists of 16 villas with king beds and private spring fed plunge pools. The villas are completely private and secluded. They also have an enormous bathroom and a separate outdoor shower.

The hotel has the most amazing staff and impeccable service.  I felt pampered the whole time.  They also have great concierge services and set up all kinds of activities for us.

The hotel has a fabulous spa. They have the most expansive menu I have personally ever seen and have a whole section of 30 minute mini treatments. The prices are very affordable. I am not a big fan of massages usually, but I had a neck and shoulder massage here and it absolutely was the best thing ever. Everyone else raved about their treatments too.

In Nayara Springs there is one restaurant- Amor Loco- and the food is simply wonderful. You have to have them do the after dinner coffee roasting tableside. I won’t describe it because it will ruin the surprise! As a guest at Nayara Springs, you have access to all that is offered across the bridge in Arenal Nayara too.  They have a couple more restaurants and a wine bar. Altimira has great dinner food but I particularly loved this one for their expansive breakfast buffet. Sushi Amor of course has sushi but also fabulous ceviche and a few Peruvian dishes. The wine bar has 90 bottles and you scan a card at the “machine” for either 1, 3, or 6 ounces. You can do tastings all night here!

The Arenal region is very lush and green year round and just full of activities. We went to Sky Trek and zip lined the highest lines in Costa Rica. A Sky Tram gondola takes you to the top of the mountain first. The tallest line is 660 feet high and the longest one is half a mile! This was a pure adrenaline rush as you reach speeds up to 45 miles per hour! I also went to Eco Termales Hot Springs. There are 6 pools ranging in temperature from 98 to 106 degrees. Pure relaxation and soothing on tired muscles!

Our next day was just as adventurous but not quite so adrenaline packed! We started our day with a 3 hour hike at Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. This rainforest hike leads you through the forest and takes you over 16 bridges, 6 of which are suspension bridges. They are a little shaky and pretty high so may be scary to some, but they offer amazing views. Our naturalist guide Jairo with Jacamar Tours was a wealth of information on the plants and animals we saw. The highlight for me was the spider monkeys, especially the momma with a baby on her back.

A great shot my friend took of one of the hanging bridges

Next we toured the working organic farm Arenal Vida Campesina. On just 7 acres, they have over 100 crops! We ate lunch in their restaurant that serves dishes sourced right from their farm- the ultimate farm to table. After lunch we toured and learned about coffee and processed some sugar cane.  The family was so friendly and the tour was really interesting. I found out later they also do cooking classes. Wish I had gotten in on that!

Following the farm, we went to La Fortuna waterfall. You can hike to the bottom and swim in the very cold water. After our busy day already, we opted to just look from the viewing platform!

The second half of my vacation took place in Bagaces in the Guanacaste region at Rio Perdido. It is owned by the same people as Nayara Springs, but so very different. I can only describe this as adventure camp with luxury touches.

My room was very unique. It was raised and boxy, almost like a tree house. It was very minimalist in design but extremely functional and well thought out. The king bed can be split into two twins and there is a third twin trundle bed underneath. Very smart. I loved the porch with hammocks- great place to listen to the river or the howler monkeys!

While I enjoyed the rooms, the focus here is on activity. The property boasts bike trails, hiking, 3 pools, a spa, river tubing, hot springs, a little thing they call Aerial Canyon Adventure. It is a series of 5 zip  lines, via ferrata climbs, a tarzan swing, and a wobbly bridge. It was absolutely amazing! The guides even take pictures the whole time and offer you a disc for only $25!

I did not get to do the river tubing because the water was too high from rain earlier in the week. I did go to their hot springs. They have buckets of volcanic mud that you paint yourself with. You leave it one for 10-15 minutes to dry and then rinse it off. It is supposed to detox your body. All I know is I felt silky smooth afterwards! I was too busy to make it to the spa but my friend said her massage was simply the best and that they worked on areas she did not know she had.

Right now they have one restaurant and a pool bar. The restaurant is a large open air structure with amazing views. The menu has a lot of options but they are working on new selections too. I enjoyed everything I ate, but especially the nachos that use yam chips instead of tortilla chips. And I must have had a half dozen of their special welcome fruit drink. So fresh!

This property changed general managers a month ago and he is basically overhauling everything. There are so many changes coming soon. It will be like a whole new property in 6-12 months. They have plans to finish paving the entrance road, expanding or building a new spa, adding a rock climbing area, building a very large tarzan swing in another canyon, new menus and more options, reducing paper throughout the property, starting an organic garden, adding locally made bath products, improving service, and adding another 20 rooms for a total of 40  just to name a few. I am very excited about their changes and can not wait to return!

Travel to try new things

When I travel, I make it a mission to try new things. Obviously the destination in itself is a new experience, but I also really try and push myself to try things out of my comfort zone. I am blessed to have visited a few new places this past year, but I am more proud of what I did while I was there.
For those of you that know me, I do NOT get in the ocean. I am terrified of sharks and just what may be under the water in general. But on a recent trip to Turks and Caicos I was struck by how clear the water was and how I could see everything. The best part was that after watching the water for 4 days, I never saw anything, hardly even a fish. So after not even stepping foot in the ocean for ten or more years, I not only got in the water, but also kayaked in the ocean! I had to have a friend take a picture because I knew my husband and kids would not believe it. It felt so good to face that fear and to have fun in the water like everyone else.
So on my next trip to Jamaica, I took this a little further. The water was not as clear, but I was game anyway. I once again got in the water and this time I tried stand up paddle boarding. I do not suggest trying this for the first time after two rum punches, but it was fun despite the falls. It just felt like such an accomplishment for me. Since I was not great at it on the first try, I am already planning on trying it again in Costa Rica in December. I have to redeem myself.
On each trip this year I have also tried so many new foods. It really gives you a sense of place to try local specialties. In the past couple of months I have tried callaloo, festival, plantains (note- I hate bananas so this was a hard sell for me), guacamole , sushi (yes I was very late to the game on both of these), and mallorca to name a few. I have eaten pretty much anything put in front of me and have enjoyed almost all of it. The food is such a big part of any destination and I have great memories of each trip that revolve around the food. So many of my great memories involve a dinner with friends or a sunset cocktail.
So what next? I am visiting Cost Rica in December and already have plans to rappel a waterfall, walk a wobbly bridge (the name alone makes me dizzy), zip line, and take a mud bath.
I would love to hear some of your adventures too!

Round Hill Villas – Jamaican Paradise

I stepped off the plane in Jamaica and was greeted by Oliver from the Jamaican Tourism Board who led me through immigration and customs in under 10 minutes total. I realize now what an amazing service this is as colleagues and other hotel guests told me about their two hour wait! There are a couple options for this service, but at $50-100 it is so worth it!

My driver Goofy (yes that is his name) shuttled me and a couple other guests to Round Hill Villas. It is about a 25 minute drive from the airport, located in west of Montego Bay. Along the way you see vendors selling drinks in the middle of the street, people fishing, lots of chain restaurants like KFC & Pizza Hut, local jerk restaurants, a possible cruise ship docked, and of course beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea.

Upon entering Round Hill’s private entrance, you drive up and around a curved hill that affords gorgeous sea views from the crest. As you drive down the hill to the main reception and lobby, there are roads off to each side leading to different villas. The open air lobby with a view straight to the beach, the complimentary rum punch, the easy check-in process, & the smiling staff are quite the welcome.

Lobby Entrance at Round Hill

Lobby Entrance at Round Hill

Round Hill has a rather long history. It opened in 1953 and quickly became a destination for the rich and famous.  Guests include Paul McCartney, Michael Douglas, Roger Moore and JFK and Jackie O. Kennedy to name a few. More recent years saw “Stella get her Groove Back” in villa 11 and star Taye Diggs was later married here. Many of the elite purchased villas here and are still owned today. When they are not in residence, the villas are rented to guests.

One such shareholder is Ralph Lauren who designed the Pineapple House rooms after a recent renovation. The villas are influenced by his design but are individually decorated by their owners. The style features lots of white with bamboo, wicker and mahogany furniture.

After checking in, I went straight to the Seaside Terrace for lunch. The view was stunning and my food amazing. I ordered Jerk Pork Tacos with pineapple slaw and roasted corn.  Other days for lunch we sat at the beach side bar.  The food here was from the same kitchen, with a slightly abbreviated menu. It was a nice very casual place for lunch.

My lunch view

For dinner, they have different locations and menus each night for variety. On Thursday and Sunday, dinner is served in The Grill with a farm-to-table menu. All of the ingredients are fresh and local, with many coming from Round Hill’s own organic garden. I enjoyed snapper in parchment with local vegetables such as callaloo, similar to spinach. The highlight of my meal was the smoked marlin yam balls for an appetizer. I was a little hesitant as they did not sound like much, but they were hands down the best thing I ate on the entire trip. I highly recommend these!

On Friday night, we had the Jamaica Night buffet which highlights local specialties. The salad station was absolutely fantastic and I almost never made it to the hot foods! They featured conch, festival (similar to a hushpuppy but a little sweeter), oxtail, jerk chicken and pork, and vegetables. And don’t miss the dessert station with lots of pineapple and coconut.

While talking about the dining choices, I can’t fail to mention that room service is available and if you are renting a villa, the staff can prepare meals in the villa. We had our made-to-order breakfast in the villa twice and it was lovely.  Every afternoon at 4pm is tea with a variety of nibbles. And there is also the Polo Lounge cocktail bar where you can see old black and white photos of those past famous guests I mentioned. Round Hill offers several dining packages too.

The accommodations closest to the beach is the 36 room Pineapple House. All of the rooms were designed by Ralph Lauren and face the ocean. The downstairs rooms feature small patios or balconies, where the upstairs rooms feature high ceilings  and large shuttered windows that open wide for the view. The rooms are clean with white stone and large mahogany four poster beds. The rooms also overlook the resort’s infinity pool.

Nestled in the hillside, all facing west for fabulous sunset views, are 27 individually owned villas. Our villa #16 had 6 bedrooms each with their own living area and ensuite, a kitchen for staff use, and a pool with an expansive sun deck and dozens of seating options. Other villas have 2-6 bedrooms and all but 3 have pools. You may rent the entire villa or if you just want one or two rooms, the staff works to accommodate you in a villa with room separations for privacy. If you choose a villa room, you will not be booked right next to someone you don’t know. Our villa had a room upstairs, two below the pool and one off to the side for a separate villa feel so it could easily have been rented to separate couples or families. You would have only shared the pool area.

My personal room was 73A, located on the bottom below the pool. This room is reached by a set of stairs near the kitchen and was my own little private haven. This room has a private patio, a sitting room/library and then a large king room with another sitting area. Next to the library is another living area with a pool table that separates my room from bedroom #73. This bedroom has two beds and would be a perfect accompaniment to my room for a small family of four. They would have total privacy from the rest of the villa. Both of these rooms have a very unique feature too. Above the bed is a window into the swimming pool!

Round Hill is a leisure resort but still has plenty to do, or  you can relax and do nothing at all. There are water sports such as kayaks, paddle board, glass bottom boats & snorkeling. They are currently renovating the spa and will also bring the treatments to your room. I had an in room massage- ask for Althea. And though I did not do it personally, my friends went to yoga and core classes with the amazing Donovan. He has been there over 20 years and he knows what he is doing. They loved him. There is also nightly entertainment near the restaurants. They also have the Pineapple Kid’s club daily from 9am to 5pm. They have daily shuttles to Rose Hall for shopping and to the Tryall club for golf. And if you do want to leave the property and explore, you simply have to talk to the fabulous concierge Kingsley who has been with Round Hill for about 50 years (I forget the exact number but it was staggering!) You can not miss his smiling face and bright teal jacket.

While on property I met one couple on their fourth visit and another couple who was visiting for the 14th time! After staying a couple days myself, I can certainly see why guests return again and again!

Until you can visit yourself, I will leave you with a gorgeous sunset view from our villa.

Plan Family Trips with Everyone in Mind

I grew up with a mom who practically refused to fly and a dad who fortunately loved to drive. Our family took all our vacations by car. Long road trips together before car seats and seat belts were mandatory. Our parents would put us in the car at 4:00am lying down with blankets and start the trip with us still asleep. By the time we woke up hungry we had already been travelling for hours.
What I remember best about our trips is that my mom always planned for weeks. She would meticulously lay out each day but build in time for spontaneity. She always asked for our input and about what we wanted to do. I remember the summer we went to New England and I was obsessed with the Julia Roberts movie “Mystic Pizza”. We had no plans in Connecticut at all, but we made a day trip to Mystic just for me. And how we went to LL Bean in Maine because I had to have a flannel shirt bought IN Maine. And how my mom let us choose CATS on Broadway even though she is literally terrified of real cats. I remember how special each trip was because it was planned just for us.
As I grew up and had children of my own, I wanted them to enjoy similar family vacations. As they got older, I asked more and more about what they wanted as I was planning our trips. Our first big road trip was the summer they turned 6 and 9. We drove from Birmingham to Vermont. 23 hours with so much to see along the way! A favorite stop was Hershey, PA just to see the Hershey Kiss streetlights I told them about from my childhood. Our most successful trip to date was Sacramento to Denver- 9 states in 14 days. Our route was twisted and long due to my kids’ must-haves for the trip. My oldest just had to see “big” trees in CA and my youngest had to go to Mount Rushmore, so those became our start and end points with all the major National Parks in between. The trip was so fabulous because we all had input into what we wanted. And we simply enjoyed each other’s company away from everyday stress. We played a lot of car bingo and the license plate game!
When planning a trip for your family, whether it is just the two of you, or a multi-generational trip of 20, always take into account everyone. You may have to compromise and do something one day that is not your favorite, but you will see how happy that makes the other people and you realize it is worth it. Plus the anticipation is even greater and the excitement grows as you wait for your turn. Every vacation is different and no two families’ trips are alike. Always plan with YOUR family in mind and make sure everyone gets a say in what you do.
